DayZ Standalone Alpha – How Much Will it Cost?

One of the greatest questions asked by the Fans is the price of the DayZ Standalone once it’s released.

So let’s cut it short, how much does it really cost? To tell you the truth, no one seems to know better than Rocket, but it seems that Rocket himself is unsure of it too.

But what we do know is the price range that Dean Hall had in his mind. To recall, Rocket stated in an Gamasutra interview:

So what we’re doing at the moment is, we gave free keys as a gift to the forum moderators, the Reddit moderators, people who helped out with DayZ development, and stuff like that. I guess there’s about 30-100 people involved with that.

From here, once we’ve finished our server/client architecture — because we’re moving it an MMO model — we’re reviewing the situation of that in June, and then we do an alpha, just like Minecraft. People pay X amount of dollars and they get early, cheap access to it, and then once it’s beta, price goes up, maybe, say, $10, and once it goes retail, the price goe”s up $10.

Now THAT was ages ago. Recently, Hall tweeted that the game would be released with a cost of not more than 20 EUR. And with the recent ‘conversation’ with the fans via reddit, and if Hall’s speculations are correct, we can expect that the game will indeed be released in the public in those price range (roughly $10- $20). And to quote our man Rocket for the last time:

It costs me more than $8 euros to go to the cinema :P

EDIT:

Here’s the definitive status:

  • No decision has been made on the specific number value for the price
  • The price will increase through each development stage
  • The final price will be less than standard retail price
  • Any statements of price by anyone, including myself, is speculation

The price range seems fair and lower than most competitors. This is because the game is planned to be released similarly to Minecraft by having a low price entry-point allowing feedback from the vast community with fast iteration from a collaborative team. That’s a “win-win” situation for hardcore players who would buy the game once it is released.

Now that we know the price-range and have accumulated the money for it… All that is left, is the actual game to be released.
